{"id":113,"date":"2010-04-18T23:11:00","date_gmt":"2010-04-19T03:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mbuchholz.com\/blog\/?p=113"},"modified":"2011-06-23T08:58:06","modified_gmt":"2011-06-23T12:58:06","slug":"gateway-arch-st-louis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mbuchholz.com\/photoblog\/113\/gateway-arch-st-louis","title":{"rendered":"Gateway Arch; St. Louis, Missouri"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Made it to St. Louis, Missouri early this morning to walk the city and see the Gateway Arch.\u00a0 I refused to pay for parking and opted instead to park along the water front (literally a couple feet from the water), next to a &#8220;No Parking&#8221; sign, located inside of a small gated-lot labeled &#8220;Employees Only.&#8221;\u00a0 That&#8217;s two good reasons to tow my car, and one good reason to get a new rental if the river ever rises a couple inches.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mbuchholz.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/20100418-_DSC8479.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1729\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mbuchholz.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/20100418-_DSC8479-435x670.jpg\" alt=\"Gateway Arch Abstract; St. Louis, Missouri\" width=\"435\" height=\"670\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mbuchholz.com\/photoblog\/pictures\/2010\/04\/20100418-_DSC8479-435x670.jpg 435w, https:\/\/www.mbuchholz.com\/photoblog\/pictures\/2010\/04\/20100418-_DSC8479-194x300.jpg 194w, https:\/\/www.mbuchholz.com\/photoblog\/pictures\/2010\/04\/20100418-_DSC8479.jpg 464w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 435px) 100vw, 435px\" \/><\/a><!--more-->By late morning the park was full of tourists, and school buses packed with sugar-filled children continually pulled-up to shuffle the little devils onto the scene.\u00a0 It took me ten minutes to take the above shot because people couldn&#8217;t stop touching the sides of the arch, and every person that moved once they saw me was quickly replaced by a couple more.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mbuchholz.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/20100418-_DSC8520.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1730\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mbuchholz.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/20100418-_DSC8520-444x670.jpg\" alt=\"Gateway Arch Park; St. Louis, Missouri\" width=\"444\" height=\"670\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mbuchholz.com\/photoblog\/pictures\/2010\/04\/20100418-_DSC8520-444x670.jpg 444w, https:\/\/www.mbuchholz.com\/photoblog\/pictures\/2010\/04\/20100418-_DSC8520-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/www.mbuchholz.com\/photoblog\/pictures\/2010\/04\/20100418-_DSC8520.jpg 483w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 444px) 100vw, 444px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The tourists stuck to the typical spots for their picture-taking, while I wandered through brush, between buildings, and up trees to try to get different angles of the monument.\u00a0 These spots ended up giving the best shots of the structure, even though not a single tourist was within 300 feet of me. Eventually I was spotted, and for about 15-minutes another photographer casually followed me around.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mbuchholz.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/20100418-_DSC8573.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1731\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mbuchholz.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/20100418-_DSC8573-445x670.jpg\" alt=\"Gateway Arch Street Reflection; St. Louis, Missouri\" width=\"445\" height=\"670\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mbuchholz.com\/photoblog\/pictures\/2010\/04\/20100418-_DSC8573-445x670.jpg 445w, https:\/\/www.mbuchholz.com\/photoblog\/pictures\/2010\/04\/20100418-_DSC8573-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/www.mbuchholz.com\/photoblog\/pictures\/2010\/04\/20100418-_DSC8573.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 445px) 100vw, 445px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After a while, I ventured over to Illinois to take pictures across the Mississippi River.\u00a0 I ran into Malcom W. Martin while there, and for some reason was entertained with the idea of putting\u00a0sandals\u00a0on the statue:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mbuchholz.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/20100418-_DSC8621.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1732\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mbuchholz.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/20100418-_DSC8621-445x670.jpg\" alt=\"Malcom W. Martin at Gateway Arch Observation Deck; St. Louis, Missouri\" width=\"445\" height=\"670\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mbuchholz.com\/photoblog\/pictures\/2010\/04\/20100418-_DSC8621-445x670.jpg 445w, https:\/\/www.mbuchholz.com\/photoblog\/pictures\/2010\/04\/20100418-_DSC8621-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/www.mbuchholz.com\/photoblog\/pictures\/2010\/04\/20100418-_DSC8621.jpg 476w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 445px) 100vw, 445px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After reading underneath the arch, walking more than four miles around the city, and enjoying a delicious steak lunch with a cold beer, I left St. Louis to resume my journey along the back-roads of the mid-west to become more familiar with the real culture.\u00a0 It was there that I became familiar with what is sure to become the fastest growing religion in the world: Cowboy Church.<\/p>\n<p>Sitting alongside of the road in farm country was a normal looking barn, with the odd addition of a &#8220;Welcome Cowboys!&#8221; banner hanging above a <em>Cowboy Church<\/em> sign.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, this is real.<\/p>\n<p>The apparent aim is to add a western twist to the Catholic faith; cowboy hats are required for admission, baptisms are done in a cattle tank, and they even have their own Ten Commandments:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em>1.) Just one God.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em>2.) Honor yer Ma &amp; Pa.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em>3.) No tellin&#8217; tales.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em>4.) Git yourself to Sunday meeting.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em>5.) Put nothin&#8217; before God.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em>6.) No foolin&#8217; around with another fella&#8217;s gal.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em>7.) No killin&#8217;.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em>8.) Watch yer mouth.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em>9.) Don&#8217;t take what ain&#8217;t yers.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em>10.) Don&#8217;t be hankerin&#8217; for yer buddy&#8217;s stuff.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>From what I was able to find, the sermons are extremely short because of the fact that they try to make use of the rodeo ring set up within the barn.<\/p>\n<p>I wish I could have attended.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mbuchholz.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/20100418-_DSC8424.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-4\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1728\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mbuchholz.com\/photoblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/20100418-_DSC8424-640x654.jpg\" alt=\"Gateway Arch Fisheye; St. Louis, Missouri\" width=\"640\" height=\"654\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mbuchholz.com\/photoblog\/pictures\/2010\/04\/20100418-_DSC8424-640x654.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.mbuchholz.com\/photoblog\/pictures\/2010\/04\/20100418-_DSC8424-293x300.jpg 293w, https:\/\/www.mbuchholz.com\/photoblog\/pictures\/2010\/04\/20100418-_DSC8424.jpg 689w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the way back home I also came across one crazy invention at one of the rest stops: all-in-one sinks.
